Feast of S. Agate - February 3,4,5

Catania and S. Agate

Three days of cult, devotion, folclore, traditions that do not have reply in the world. Only the Saint Week of Seville in Spain and the festivity of the Corpus Cuzco Dominions in Perù can be compared, as far as popularity, to the celebrations of S. Agate, from five centuries always equal. For three days people  crowd in the ways and the public squares. Devout people or onlookers are available to hundred and hundred of thousand, also until to a million.

 Three incredible days

They are three days of celebrations, but two in particular, when Sant' Agate ( 4 and 5 of February ) in its silver one fercolo ("a vara") go between its people, cross the popular quarters and those high ones. First day, the 3, is developed in three moments: the long and solemn procession of the noon for the Offer of the wax, to which the highest civil, religious and military authorities participate city with the banners of the Common one, of the Province and the University. From the Church of Sant' Agate to the Furnace to the Cathedral Basilica the procession cuts two wings of incredible crowd. They close the eleven candlemas, expressions of the corporations of the city trades, and the two carriages of the catanese Senate, an eighteenth-century sedan, continuation from one more small, accommodates the communal administrators once the Senate, formed from patrizio (the mayor) and from it swears (city council members to you). In the afternoon at 15 o' clock there is a typical walking match called "Trofeo S.Agata" with the champions of the cross world-wide between ancient and modern roads of the center. Finally the evening, after the 20 the huge firework show them in public square Dome. The night that follows is sleepless for many citizen that early in the morning crowds the Cathedral Basilica for the first encounter with the Saint. The atmosphere is strongly emotional. Sant' Agate comes capacity from the devout people wrapped up in the "sacco", than probably it sends back to the tunic white woman of the ancient ritual in honor of Iside, of whose Catania cult was important center centuries before Christian age. Before on the altar they centers then on "launches", the bust, in waving of its bust, covered of jewels, donates also from king and emperors to you, between which the cross offered from Vincenzo Bellini, she proceeds similar to a boat with moved sea, and between applauses and waving of handkerchiefs white men, that they compose like a flight of gulls, setting itself between the decorations of the city baroque. A scenography that no director you would know to repeat neither, much less, to invent. After which the bust begins the external turn (in sicilian language it's called "ddi viddani") crossing Porta Uzeda (some years ago makes it was assisted to a colorful launch of wide strip, the famous one" strisciata ", that the planes dressed all of live colors to us), Dusmet stret with the characteristic ones arches that support the railroad and under which, once, rippled the sea, neighbor to the Biscari street where it seems is been born the noble Agate. A waited for passage is what Carlo Alberto until to Stesicoro public square goes from public square. And here we enter in the places more beloveds to the citizen of Catania, places of the cult, because between these he walls ancient Sant' Agate endured the jail and the martyrdom, and where, after atrocious suffering, she died. Spectacular moment also this. The million of devout people  pull of race the bust for all the "salita dei Cappuccini", stopping itself to half in order to make homage the Sacred Jail. Therefore second slope pause to "Sant' Agata la Vetere", the first Cathedral of Catania and first place of interment of the Female Saint (but is who supports that Carlo Alberto was buried in public square, to the inside of "Santuario della Santissima Annunziata"., better known like church of the Carmine. The evening the bust follows the distance in the popular Catania street: Plebiscito, Fortino, S. Cristoforo. In these quarters the festivity comes lived in various way. Houses (above all many bottoms) open, illuminated, festive; full bar for all the night. Musics, stalls with nougat, the typical "calia", grill where you furnish in order to brace horse meat. Illuminated balconies and shops stands with the image of the saint, display windows of storees and bar with artistic models of the candlemas. Great fires of artifice before the return, without the shiver of an underground to risk of navy (until to the 1992 has not been made of race) and still through the Uzeda Door in the Cathedral Basilica while the night softens the dark only to the first lights of the morning.

Show and devotion

The time of some hour of sleep because in the late morning (we are not to day 5, to the clou of the festivity) purposely celebrates the pontificale presided from a sended preside. To the sunset the second part of the turn of the Saint for the center of the city has beginning, in the ancient Catania. The bust comes in very slow, especially in recent years, for  Etnea street, the city drawing-room. The eleven candlemas adorned to festivity opens the procession. In front of the cord at least seven hundred of devout people ("tutti devoti tutti. Cittadini, viva Sant'Agata") pull the bust, tipically called "vara". Then sound the bell of the Common one in order to announce the homage of the Mayor to the female saint. Then the river of the interminable procesion moves showing for hours a living picture to us. People will carry in public square Village for artifice fires, notice like those of "sera del tre". In a great hurry, as the candlemas engaged in the resistance contest, to the climb of S. Giuliano, ready to mainly support the tall candle of the own winning profession. The hours pass, the night are left over. Sant' Agate waits for with patience to the crossing between Etnea Street and of S. Giuliano that ends the argument, for the final tear which will hold with the suspended breath, that one with the applause, if all it will have gone well, on the climb of S. Giuliano. Sin for the late hour, but to see a dangerous and therefore felt race therefore from the devout people is a great show. E' a piece of the classified festivity to the young people. Us strong arms and legs want salde in order to pull the tons and tons of the bust. But it is a sign of love and devotion that cannot lack. And like once, to make it in an only one pulled, means trarne of the good auspices for the year. Yes, because the true New Year's Day for the citizen of Catania is February 5 and all the contracts, a time had like departure and point of reference this date.

Martyrdom and historical center

Catania, after many times from devastating earthquakes and eruptions of the Etna, have paid to the Female saint the beautifulst and prestigious churches and monuments between. Today they can be admired in the climb of the Cappuccini, to the inside of the church of Sant' Agate to the Jail, the rest of of III the century d. C. that they contain the prison where Sant' Agate suffered the martyrdom and it died to you. Close there are the churches of Sant' Agate to the Furnace (in Stesicoro public square) and of Sant' Agata la Vetere ( S. Maddalena street), the first cathedral of Catania (exactly the Vetere) and perhaps place of the first interment. Still the Abbey of Sant' Agate, the "stele" in public square of the Martyrdoms, Fontana of via Dusmet, the Dome normanno-baroque. While the Cathedral Basilica conserve the relique in valuable jobs of jeweller's art, works of Di Bartolo like the bust and the coffer (not is a statue of Sant' Agate), the church of the Sacred Jail represents the center of the S.Agate cult, the living history of the martyrdom, of the agate life.  In the temple, beyond to the dark room, you can see the lavic lab in which they are impress. In this temple the citizen of Catania finds again its spiritual identity. They erected the jail as one of the bastions of the old ones walls. It attests the bastion, still today very visible, than ago part of the part going back building to the end of the XI or the beginning of XII the century. The jail was buried and annexed to the constructions in the pressed ones of prethorium of the ancient roman city, here where there was the representative residence of Quinziano, its persecutor. The church guards some of the most precious religious memories and historical citizens, have a rustic suggestion although she is inserted in full city. Over the altar greater one great table, dated 1588 and signed from the Niger, representing Sant' Agate to the stake. Near the jail there is a stone of washes, a lot venerated, with the print of the feet.  In the sacrarium it is remarkable the ancient plate (sec. XV) with the image of the Saint.  Tombstones, bas-relieves , an epigraph saying "Noli offendere patriam Agathae, quia ultrix iniuriarum est" (don't offend the Agate native land, because it revenge the injuries), an eighteenth-century  small check representing the Saint.

Candlemasses, a baroque festivity

"Nearly all the sicilian festivities - writes the historian  mons. Giovanni Lanzafame - are baroques ". On purpose about the eleven candlemasses he speaks specifically about "baroque in motion", also for the famous one "annacata". A baroque that moves in one baroque city, like redesigned from Vaccarini for its reconstruction after the earthquake of 1693. In Spain very 120 "pasos" (busts) narrate for the roads the passion of Christ and the pains of Maria; in Perù the S.S. Sacramento comes preceded in on a beuatiful procession from "tronos" (the busts ones) that plastic narrate with wooden masterpieces the life of some witnesses of Christ and some titles of Madonna. On the Spanish furrow there are also the eleven candlemasses of Catania. A time they exceeded the thirty number: the war and the passing of some trades involved painful cuts. Ten large tall candles and one more small illuminate the distance of the procession. They walk in seniority order, even if between  "Rinoti" and "Ortofloricultori" there was sour fight for the first place. A lacked understanding and a diatribe between the two categories carried the candlemasses to proceed in brace in order much time, with the small candlemas in the head. Also today it opens the intentional tall candle from mons. Ventimiglia, follows that one of  "Rinoti" gift of the inhabitants of San Giuseppe la Rena, with the four griffins to the base. It follows the tall candle of "Ortofloricultori"  in gotic style, with the statues of the martyrdoms and bishops of Catania. On the top of the candlemas there is the decanter, but in order much time camped a bunch of flowers. And of continuation the candlemas of the Fishmongers, in  rococò style, with many  banners, ex voto and with the statue of S. Francisco di Paola, the Patron saint of sea people; that one of the valuable and sparkling "Fruttivendoli" with a beautiful bust of Sainct Agate; that one of "Macellai" showing a typical bunch of  flowers; that one of "Pastai", a pure eighteenth-century candlestick ; that one of "Pizzicagnoli (grocers)" in  liberty  style, with the characteristics cariatyd to the base; that one of "Panettieri", heaviest (they carry it in twelve rather than in eight, in ten but that one of the Vinaioli) with the angels to natural height; of "Vinaioli (pub-keepers)", exactly, the second candlemas for gravity, with four artistic lions and gryphons supporting all the system. He closes candlemas intentional from the Dusmet blessed soul for the city Circle Sainct' Agate: in the restoration of 1988 it has been enriched from an artistic bunch of flowers. The attended festivity more for the candlemas, after that for days has turned the city far and wide, is that one of day 3 to the Fish market and in public square Dome, when they make the homage the mayor.

An international cult

The cult of Sant' Agate is not only in Catania. The veneration for the saint is scattered all over the world. The Saint of Catania  protect 44 Italian common, 14 of which carry the name of the Saint. In the Malta neighbor he is Female with S. Paul, therefore like in the Marino Republic Saint. In Spain it is venerated to Villarba of the Alcor in Andalusia, to Jèria (province of Valencia). Also in far India there is Sant' Agate, to Viayawala. In Argentine she is the female saint of the National Fire Departments and comes solemn celebrated to the Boca di Buenos Aires. In Italy the devozione is a lot: an oratory in the Abazia di Montecatini, to Cremona in the wonderful Collegiata where the tablet exists originates bringing them the praise that second the tradition an Angel placed in the sepolcro. A copy is visible on the left hand of Sant' Agate. The Lombardy is the richer region of the cult churns. In the Dome there is an altar with a magnificent representing picture Sant' Agate. There are also two statues of the sainct in the guglie. Florence (exists one table of XIII the century) invoke Sainct' Agate against fires; Rome has dedicated two beautiful churches to them: Sainct' Agate of the Goti and Sainct' Agate to the Suburra (Trastevere); to Naples a effigy in the catacomb of S. Gennaro in one fresco of the four century.

The art and Sant' Agate

Sant' Agate has works in all the parts of the world: in the church of S. Sofia to Kiev, in the Ucraina, to "Apollinare nuovo" in Ravenna; in "portale of S. Stefano" to Vienna; in the temple of S. George to Dinkeluehl; statues admire to Malta, to Villalba of the Alcor in Spain; one processional table in the museum of the Dome in "Galleria degli Uffizi" (Filippo Lippi) and in "Palazzo Pitti" (Sebastiano of the Lead) of Florence; jobs of the Borgognone to Bergamo. In Catania, by private houses and all the churches dedicated to the Female saint (Saint' Agate to the Jail, Village, the Vetere), exist many envelopes of Agate. In the church of Sant' Agate to the Sciare a painting on stone slate not touched from the lave of 1669. Catania, with its province, is naturally full of burlaps and documents of Sant' Agate. The most famous is in Nicolosi, to the memory of Dusmet cardinal who stopped washes with the veil of the Saint, saving the citizen from the destruction.
